Common Threads Family Cooking Classes
Project Budget: $8,000
Common Threads is a nonprofit that brings health and wellness to children, families and communities through cooking and nutrition education. We have served families in Los Angeles since 2008 and last year alone reached 41,000 individuals.
With support from AltaMed, we will empower 32 children and parents/caregivers how to make healthier food choices for their long-term well-being. Specifically, we will deliver two sessions of our experiential, six-week Family Cooking Class with families of two of our partners in Southeast Los Angeles: LINC Housing at Mosaic Gardens and Aspire Junior Collegiate Academy.
In our Family Cooking Classes, children and parents will learn how to cook nutritious, economical meals together and incorporate healthy habits at home, while maintaining their existing traditions. Each lesson will include education on a nutrition concept and cooking technique, and the preparation of two to three recipes around one of the following themes: Family Dinner Without the Stress, Restaurant Meals at Home, and A Healthy Start: Breakfast Made Easy. In total, participants will receive 384 hours of hands-on education and 384 healthy meals and snacks – food they have learned to prepare together, with recipes and skills they can take home with them for years to come.
