A New Leaf Program
Project Budget: $30,000
A Vision of Health
The New Leaf Program is a one-year program focusing on nutrition and exercise. The goal is for participants to lose 5-7 % of their starting body weight and increase their physical activity to a minimum of 150 minutes per week. Participants meet with lifestyle coaches on a weekly basis for the first 16 weeks, then monthly for the next 6-8 months.
In sessions they are educated on proper nutrition, and are provided with light cooking demonstrations with healthy recipes to reduce their risk of type 2 diabetes. As the epidemic of type 2 diabetes rises in the SELA community, more children and young adults are being diagnosed.
Our program will not only benefit parents and young adults, but children will also begin to live a healthier lifestyle as they see their parents make lifestyle changes at home. The program is available to all individuals over the age of 18 who have been diagnosed by their healthcare provider as pre-diabetic in the SELA area. This year long program is offered in Spanish at the South Gate Recreation Center.
